Generosity Prompt #8 - EVERY DAY GENEROSITY

“You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” 2 Corinthians 9: 11

Today’s Thought – Sometimes we believe generosity requires a major act when in reality we can encourage others through our small gestures of thoughtfulness, “being generous on every occasion”

Generosity Prompt - Buy a candy bar or some other small item for a friend/coworker/neighbor as an act of encouragement. Hand it to them or place it on their desk with a note. (Don’t make a big deal of it or expect anything in return).

Generosity Prompt #7 - PRE-DECIDE TO GIVE

“You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.’” 2 Corinthians 9:7

Today’s Thought – Have you noticed that the month slips by and you intentions to give have not fully become a reality? How do you prioritize your financial giving?

Generosity Prompt – Make a giving plan for this year with your spouse. Do you need to set up online giving or a giving account in order to systematize “giving first”?  If so, do it today.

Generosity Prompt #6 - A FAMILY PLAN

“Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share” I Timothy 6:18

Today’s Thought – How are you intentionally modeling good deeds and generosity for and with your family?

Generosity Prompt - Make a list of 3 ways your family has been generous in serving others.   Celebrate this and discuss how to intentionally continue for the next year.

Generosity Prompt #5 - PRAYER FOR OPEN EYES

Today’s Thought – A prayer: Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not count the cost; to fight and not heed the wounds; to toil and not seek for rest; to labor and not ask for reward, except to know that I am doing your will.“ ~ St. Ignatius of Loyola

Generosity Prompt – Almost a third of people surveyed say that they would like to serve those in need to but don’t know how. Write a prayer of commitment to God to invest in someone in need and ask for the eyes to see the need around you today.

Generosity Prompt #4 - UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.” Luke 12:16-21

Today’s Thought - Am I rich towards myself or rich towards God?   How would my family answer that question?  What would my checking and investment accounts declare?

Generosity Prompt – Write a prayer in your journal asking the Lord to show you what resources (skills, assets or income) you may have been “storing up” that someone may need.  Ask Him to tangibly reveal how you might hold these things loosely so that you are ready to give them when prompted.

Generosity Prompt #3 - GENEROUS GOSPEL

"Generosity is a sign of a regenerate soul. The gospel opens our soul — and with it, our hands." ~ Kent Hughes, College Church, Wheaton, IL

Today’s Thought – The gospel and generosity are inextricably linked. Sowing seeds of the gospel is an act of generosity.  And in turn, generosity is a predicted outcome of the gospel.

Generosity Prompt – Write a note of gratitude to the person or one of the people who generously shared the gospel with you.

Generosity Prompt #2 - CHANNEL OF BLESSING

“But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.” 1 Chronicles 29:14

Today’s Thought  - Have you considered that God may be resourcing you specifically to be a channel of blessing to others?

Generosity Prompt - Take a moment to list 3 specific ways you’ve been generous in the last few weeks.  Write a prayer of gratitude to God for giving you those skills or resources to give away.

Generosity Prompt #1 - GOD IS THE FIRST AND MOST GENEROUS GIVER.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

Today’s Thought – Don’t rush past these familiar words without stopping to soak in the action: God gave. Generosity begins with God. Generosity is at the very core of his nature. It is evident in His thoughts, words and actions.

Generosity Prompt - Write a note of thanks to God for all he has done for you. Acknowledge him as the owner of all things and commit to be a conduit of generous blessing to others.

Is God for You?

Look with me at this interesting exchange between Moses successor, Joshua, and the Commander of the Lord's army.

“When Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies? ” “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as commander of the Lord’s army.” Then Joshua bowed with his face to the ground in worship and asked Him, “What does my Lord want to say to His servant? ””

‭‭Joshua‬ ‭5:13-14‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

http://bible.com/72/jos.5.13-14.hcsb

Joshua asks a simple and straight forward question, "Are you for us or for our enemies?"  But the response from the Commander is strange. "Neither."

This is a very important learning for each follower of Jesus. God is not on your side. God doesn't take sides. God is THE SIDE and His expectation is that you join Him.

Notice what Joshua does.  "Then Joshua bowed with his face to the ground in worship and asked Him, 'What does my Lord want to say to His servant?'"

It is never "us" vs "them" in the eyes of the Lord. We are simply to align our thoughts, attitudes, and actions with God's and simply worship him.

So...what do you need to do with this?  Ask the Lord. Then do what he commands.

Blessings,

Pastor Matt

There Can't Be Two Best

2 Corinthians 9:6-8 (NET) "My point is this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each one of you should give just as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, because God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace overflow to you so that because you have enough of everything in every way at all times, you will overflow in every good work."

Talking about money is an interesting, and sometimes, a complicated conversation.  It seems to get even more difficult when you add God to the conversation.  But this shouldn't be true.  Knowing what God says should make things clearer, not more complicated.  (NOTE: knowing and doing are two different things).  I think the Bible is clear.  God expects you to be generous.  God expects you to be a good manager of what He has given you.  God expect a return on his investment in you.  And, I believe He gives you a lot of room to figure out what this specifically means for you within your context.

Here's the rub.  Most people don't know, or don't want to know, or simply ignore what God says concerning their money.  This frustrates me.  Do you know the #1 reason for divorce?  Yeah, money issues.  And the issue is rarely that there's too much of it.  For this reason alone, for the sake of your marriage, don't you think it wise to understand and apply what God has to say for your money?

I believe God's ways are best.  In all areas of life, including money.  If my statement is true, that "God's ways are best," it means that your ways are not best.  There can't be two best.  Here's another truth for you.  I think it makes little sense to go in a direction opposite of God and then ask God to bless your efforts.  "Hey God.  I know what you say, but it seems too hard and I really don't want to do that so I'm going to do this instead.  So, will you bless my effort?"  If you're curious to what God's response might be let me help you out, "Ummm, No."

So you get to choose.  You can't do both.  "No person can walk in two directions at the same time.  You will either take steps towards God or away from him."  - J. Piper

God will not make you nor force you to put his financial plan into place.  However, when you're ready, if/when the pain gets to be too much God's way is ready to go to work on your behalf.  So, read or re-read 2 Corinthians 9:6-8.  What is God saying to you?  What will you do about it.

Blessings,

Pastor Matt

Watch - Choose - Vote

Watch - Choose - Vote.

Let me process this with you in reverse.

Vote - There are many Christians who say they will not cast a vote for President.  I have thought about this and I don't agree with this posture.  Here are some thoughts that have led to me choosing to cast a vote in November.  Maybe these will help you as you also process your decision.

I'm not excited about either candidate but I have an awesome privilege as an American citizen to participate.  Maybe you've read this quote from Thomas Jefferson, "We in America do not have government by the majority.  We have government by the majority who participate."  You have a vote.  You have a voice.  I don't think the reasoning of "I don't like either canidate" can be your primary reason for not voting.  It may be a silly comparison but...What about Jury Duty.  Who likes that?  But we do it because it's our privilege as an American citizen.  Taxes?  Who wants to pay those?  Answer.  No one.  But we do.  Why?  Because it's a privilege to be a part of the whole.  Will you also choose not to pray for your president?  I get it.  It's a very challenging decision this election year.  That is why it is important that you choose wisely.

Choose - If you choose to vote, you probably already know who you will vote for.  But, to use some New City Church language, make sure you vote on purpose.  Voting on purpose simply means you understand the key issues, as a Christian you understand what the Bible has to say or understand the Biblical principal that applies to said issue, you understand your stance/belief, and then vote with the canidate you feel will best represent what you hold has important.

Here are some of the key issues:
Appointment of Supreme Court Judges - the next president will select judges who will make and interpret laws that will help shape our countries future.

National Security - much of this has to do with borders, citizenship, undocumented immigrants, and refugees.

Affordable Care Act (Obama Care) - either you're for it or against it.  Not much in the middle on this one.

2nd Amendment, Right to bear arms - there are a variety of opinions on what's best for gun ownership and/or gun control.

National Debt - how the USA will become fiscally responsible.

Education - in a nut shell: who should set curriculum and for or against Comman Core.

Israel - which president will build and maintain the strongest relationship with Israel.

What is your belief on these issues?  Do your beliefs align with God's Word?  If not, if you and God disagree, who wins?   These are important questions to consider.  After you make your decision, you need to watch the debate tonight.

Watch - Watch the debate.  Listen to how each canidate answers the questions.  Which communicates the values that mostly align with what you hold to be most important.  Listen...You're probably not going to like either canidate.  But, one of these two leaders will be our next president...Like it or not.  You have a voice.

So, tonight, live on CNN you can Watch, Choose, and then Vote in November.
Praying for our great country,
Pastor Matt

You Decide

On Sunday Pastor Chris shared some scripture from the Old Testament that point to the coming Messiah.  He also shared a corresponding scripture from the New Testament, written at least 400 years later, that seems to fulfill the Old Testament prophecy.  What are the odds that Jesus would fulfill ALL of them?  What are the implications for you if Jesus really did fulfill what was spoken concerning the coming Messiah?  If Jesus is who he claimed to be what affect should this have on our loyalty towards him?

You decide.  For no one can decide this for you.  Here are the scriptures that Pastor Chris used.  I hope you will use this as a study guide this week.  Blessings.

Get Moving

It's Wednesday so I thought it would be a good time to revisit some of the major themes from this past Sunday's teaching. Remember how Jesus defined devotion? Love God and love others. Let's use those as our goal.

Let's recall the Devtoed Matrix that we used as our guide.

image.jpg

Where do you spend most of your time? I know we all have our moments of selfishness. But, I'm not going to spend time talking about the quadurant of Love Yourself and Love the World. Why? Only Jesus can pull you away from your self destruction. I'd rather spend our time reflecting on the quads of Spiritual Isolation and Godless Discipleship. Why? Because, this is where the church typically hangs out.

Most Christians either, Love God and struggle loving their neighbor. Or, they love their neighbor but have a really difficult time pointing the conversation or relationship towards the things of God. Where do you typically live?

SPIRITUALLY ISOLATED
If you are spiritually isolated, take a look around you. Where do you work? Where do you play? Where do you live? Where do you go to church? Ask God to open your eyes and ears so that you may see and hear what He wants you to. The worse thing you can do is get all busy doing good stuff. You'll wear yourself out and your devotion will end as quickly as it started. Start by asking God to see and hear what He wants you to see and hear. You will be surprised with what you begin to notice.

BUT...

Noticing isn't the goal. Now that you have noticed what God wants you to, step into action. "God, what do you want me to do with what I see and hear?" I fully believe God will tell you. BEWARE...If God tells you HE EXPECTS YOU TO DO IT. Have faith and obey the Lord.

GODLESS DISCIPLESHIP
Some of you love the snot out of people. You even have a lot of friends who you would say aren't Christians. And, you might have experienced times when these friendships have led to you making selfish decisions. If you live here, take a look around. Who are your friends? Who seems to like you back? Ask God for courage. Not courage to hit them on the head with a Bible, but rather courage to engage in a spiritual conversation. Ask questions? Listen? Pray for them as you listen. Wait. Pray that they ask you a question.

BUT...

Don't go any faster than what God allows. No one enters the Kingdom of God with a spiritual wedgie. It just doesn't work that way. Don't view these conversations as a spiritual sales job. Maybe a tactic could be for you to be the LIGHT:

Listen to them. (that means you don't talk as much as they do)
Invite them to ______. (pick something they would enjoy)
Give a blessing. (don't make them pay)
Hear from God. (what does God want you to say...yep, prayer is big part of discipleship)
Tell your story. (don't tell mine, you'll mess it up. just tell them what God is doing in your life)

FULLY DEVOTED
Remember, it was Jesus who showed us how to live with perfect love for God and our neighbor. When all else fails, follow Jesus. He will show you. He wants to show you.

So, what are you waiting for. Get a move on. Get moving to the Fully Devoted quad.
Have a blessed day,
Pastor Matt

Fully Devoted

The book of Acts tells the story of how the church formed.  It’s an amazing story.  And, when you take the time to think about what happened in between the recorded events an amazing story becomes...Well, supernaturally awesome!

This Sunday we are starting a series called Devoted.  Our core scripture for this series is Acts 2:42-47.  As we prepare for Sunday I want to take a moment to share some insights about "what happened in between the recored events."

The story takes place in the city of Jerusalem.  Jerusalem wasn’t that large of a city, roughly 1 square mile.  To help you understand the size, I live in Shawnee Kansas, roughly 43 sq miles.  The size was big issue because although small, Jerusalem was the place where every Jew traveled to worship at least 3 times of the year.  Many of these Jews no longer lived in Jerusalem and had moved to surrounding countries (these Jews were referred to as the Diaspora - Jews living outside of Israel).

When the Diaspora joined the Jerusalem citizens for these festivals, the city was PACKED.
People would be everywhere.
Even sleeping in the streets.
Get this…And not just for a couple of days.  Two of these festivals were 7 weeks apart (Passover and Shavout a.k.a. the Day of Pentecost).  Many couldn’t afford the travel expenses so they would simple stay in Jerusalem for the full 7 weeks.

Okay…So we have a packed 1 square mile city.
People are everywhere.
Parking was a nightmare.  (insert silly Bible joke)

"You didn’t know Jesus had a car?  The Bible say that Jesus and his disciples arrived in one Accord.”

People are everywhere.
And...
People are talking.
7 weeks earlier a radical rabbi, named Jesus, was crucified for claiming God was his Father.
Then…3 days after his crucification his disciples began saying that he has resurrected from the dead.
Not only that, around 500 people were claiming that they had also seen this resurrected Jesus.
The city buzzing like never before.

On this specific day, exactly 7 weeks after Jesus was crucified (Passover), all of the Jewish people are making their way to the Temple for worship.  This Holy Day is called Shavout, where people gather to celebrate God giving the Law to Moses atop Mt. Sinai.

So...
The streets are filled with people walking to the Temple.
But then something happens.
In a house along the way there is a odd commotion.
So loud.
So odd.
That people stop walking and start staring.

All of the sudden men, not necessarily the most important of men, some fishermen, a tax collector, and other ordinary folks start to talk.
BOLDLY.
And, in OTHER LANGUAGES.

Here’s where it gets interesting.
All of this Diaspora (Jews living outside of Israel) hear ordinary men speaking the language of the people back home.
There is great confusion!

Hearing these men talk about God in their native language is baffling.
Peter, one of the disciples, seizes the opportunity and gives the first ever Sunday morning sermon.

And it was GOOD!
So good that someone from the crowd said, “What should we do?”
Someone asked…So Peter told them.

“Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

On that day.
3,000 people devoted themselves to God through faith that Jesus, who lived, was crucified, and lived again was indeed their source of salvation.
Get this…Before Peter’s message there were around 120 disciples.
Now...
3,120!

Immediately after this we come to Acts 2:42-47

"All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.  43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved."

Here’s something that I think is easy to overlook.
I bet a lot of those 3,000 new followers of Jesus didn’t live in Jerusalem (Diaspora).
I also bet that they didn’t soon leave.
They didn’t go back home.
I think they stayed.
And...
I think the disciples had a great big mess on their hands.
How in the world are we supposed to take care of 3,000+ people?!?
I think it were those how had homes far away who mainly “sold their property and possessions."

Now that’s devotion!

Here’s a thought.
What would it be like to have a faith like that.
What would it be like to be stirred by the Good News of Jesus in such a way that it radically changes your life.
What would it be like it you were so devoted to God that you...

I’ll let you finish that sentence.

See you on Sunday…Fully Devoted
Pastor Matt

Discovering Your Spirit Given Gifts

Before you read further...Take a quick moment to pause and tell God thank you for something specific in your life.  Okay...thanks for the quick worship service!  I wanted to provide a follow up to yesterday's message.  So, here is the list of Spirit given gifts.  These are gifts Paul lists in 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12.  My hope is that you, the follower of Jesus, would discover which gifts the Holy Spirit has given to you.

Here are 3 steps you can take that will help you discover your gifts.

  1. Which gift(s) do you naturally connect with?
(not which ones are you interested in…Or, which one(s) you wish you had.)
  2. Ask spiritually minded people, who are close to you, if they identify these gifts in your life.
  3. Ask God to affirm what gift(s) you think you have.

Here is the list of Spirit given gifts.  My prayer is that you take yet another step of discovering how God has gifted you.

Spirit Given Gifts Found in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11
(in order of appearance)

Wisdom  - varied knowledge of things human and spiritual, acquired by understanding and experience, and communicated in maxims and proverbs
Knowledge - deeper knowledge of this religion, advanced learner
Faith - convictions about God and spiritual things that cause you to approach life in a specific way
Healing - means of healing, remedy, medicine
Miracles - strength, power, and ability to restore the spiritually broken
Prophecy - 1 Corinthians 14;3, "but the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouragement, and consolation."
Discernment - ability to distinguish or judge
Tongues - language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other nations (would also include the language of Heaven)
Interpretation of Tongues - able to communicate what has been spoken more or less obscurely by others
Helps/Administration - to administer help to accomplish a process or task

From Romans
Spirit Given Gifts Found in Romans 12:28-31 (NET)
(in order of appearance)

Service - ministering, the ability to accomplish the work of a ministry (same word used in 1 Cor 12:5)
Teaching - discourse with others in order to instruct them
Exhortation - call to one's side, to summon so that you can: encourage, warn, or strongly urge.
Contributing (Giving) - to give a share of…but not not for the praise of men
Leadership - to be over, to superintend, preside over…taken seriously to get the objective completed.
Mercy - to help one afflicted…Without false whining to receive praise.

Time to Think

We don’t think for ourselves.  I’m not saying we don’t have thoughts.  I’m saying that our thoughts are often someone else’s thoughts.  Many of us really struggle with thinking for ourselves.  I know…You spend your whole day thinking.  But you might agree with me if I were to assume that much of your thinking is in response to something that has happened.

What if you took time each day to think.  Not about what just happened but rather what God might be saying to you about what has yet to happen.  Even better, what if you were to spend time thinking about what God is saying to you and how you might follow.

Read with me from Romans 12:2.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Facebook.  CNN.  FOX.  Twitter.  Each of these tell you want thoughts to have.  What if you gave God the opportunity to do that?  How might you see the world.

When we choose to look at the headlines through God’s eyes #blacklivesmatter and #bluelivesmatter look different.  When we choose to view politics through God’s eyes Trump and Clinton begin to look different.  But there is a problem…I mentioned it earlier.  The problem is most of us struggle with thinking for ourselves.  But why?

I have a theory.
Do you want to hear it?
I know…I’m telling you how to think.
Anyway…My theory is this.

We can’t stand to sit in silence.
We are extremely uncomfortable being still and knowing that He is God

Two years ago, research was done by both Virginia and Harvard Universities to discover why it is so difficult for us to simply be still and think.  You can read the whole article here.  Here’s what they discovered.  We don’t like to sit alone.  Actually, if given the chance, we will shock ourselves to break the silence.

"In more than 11 separate studies, the researchers showed that people hated being left to think, regardless of their age, education, income or the amount they used smartphones or social media...So unbearable did some find it that they took up the safe but alarming opportunity to give themselves mild electric shocks in an attempt to break the tedium.  Two-thirds of men pressed a button to deliver a painful jolt during a 15-minute spell of solitude. One man – an outlier – found thinking so disagreeable he opted for a shock 190 times.”  TheGuardian.com

Try this on this week.  Join me in breaking free from the pattern of this world.  Join me in sitting in silence.  No music.  No book.  No devotion.  Just silence.  For just 15 minutes.

I trust this practice of solitude will be fantastic for you as you think for yourself.

Much love,
Pastor Matt

A Study of 1 Corinthians chapter 10 - Part 6 - Don’t Fight God

Today we are going to conclude our study of 1 Corinthians chapter 10.  This one is probably the most difficult one to study.  Yet, when we remember who Paul is speaking to, we can hopefully move from a posture of judgement.  Too often Christians speak phrases of judgement upon the world.  And, I too think this is true…I often think the world gets exactly what it asks for…Only to not like it once we get it.  Sin is strangely full of beauty and common sense on the front end.  It’s the backside that stinks.

But here in 1 Corinthians chapter 10, Paul isn’t writing to the world, he is writing to the church.  These judgement stories are for you, not the world.  But please note…God’s judgement isn’t on all his people.  In the 4 examples Paul gives, these judgements are on people who said they were people of God yet lived like their surrounding world.  So, I’ve been asking this question, “Are you, the Christian, acting as you are supposed to?”

Here is our key scripture passage for this series.

"For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink.  For they were all drinking from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.  But God was not pleased with most of them, for they were cut down in the wilderness.  These things happened as examples for us, so that we will not crave evil things as they did.  So do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”  And let us not be immoral, as some of them were, and twenty-three thousand died in a single day.  And let us not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by snakes.  And do not complain, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel.  These things happened to them as examples and were written for our instruction, on whom the ends of the ages have come.  So let the one who thinks he is standing be careful that he does not fall.  No trial has overtaken you that is not faced by others. And God is faithful: He will not let you be tried beyond what you are able to bear, but with the trial will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it.”  1 Corinthians 10:1-13 (NET)

Here, Paul provides four “things that happened” (to followers of God) as examples for Christians to learn from.  With each example Paul offers a quick summary and then the Biblical reference.  I am going to give this four examples in list form, today we are going to look at example number 3.

  1. Don’t be idolaters - Exodus 32:1-29
  2. Don’t be immoral - Numbers 25:1-9
  3. Don’t complain about God’s provision - Numbers 21:1-9
  4. Don’t question God’s judgement - Numbers 16:20-50

Today is a long passage.  And, it’s probably going to mess with you.  But this is the example that Paul wants you to understand.  It’s found in Number chapter 16.  I am providing verses 1-35 and 41-50.

"Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth—became insolent 2 and rose up against Moses. With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council. 3 They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?”

4 When Moses heard this, he fell facedown. 5 Then he said to Korah and all his followers: “In the morning the Lord will show who belongs to him and who is holy, and he will have that person come near him. The man he chooses he will cause to come near him. 6 You, Korah, and all your followers are to do this: Take censers 7 and tomorrow put burning coals and incense in them before the Lord. The man the Lord chooses will be the one who is holy. You Levites have gone too far!”

8 Moses also said to Korah, “Now listen, you Levites! 9 Isn’t it enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the Lord’s tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them? 10 He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too. 11 It is against the Lord that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?”

12 Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. But they said, “We will not come! 13 Isn’t it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honeyto kill us in the wilderness? And now you also want to lord it over us! 14 Moreover, you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you want to treat these men like slaves[b]? No, we will not come!”

15 Then Moses became very angry and said to the Lord, “Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them.”

16 Moses said to Korah, “You and all your followers are to appear before the Lord tomorrow—you and they and Aaron. 17 Each man is to take his censer and put incense in it—250 censers in all—and present it before the Lord. You and Aaron are to present your censers also.” 18 So each of them took his censer, put burning coals and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 19 When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition to them at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the glory of the Lord appeared to the entire assembly. 20 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 21 “Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once.”

22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, “O God, the God who gives breath to all living things, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?”

23 Then the Lord said to Moses, 24 “Say to the assembly, ‘Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.’”

25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 He warned the assembly, “Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.” 27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents.

28 Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the Lord has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea: 29 If these men die a natural death and suffer the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me. 30 But if the Lord brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead, then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt.”

31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. 33 They went down alive into the realm of the dead, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. 34 At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, “The earth is going to swallow us too!”

35 And fire came out from the Lord and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.

The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. “You have killed the Lord’s people,” they said.

42 But when the assembly gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron and turned toward the tent of meeting, suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the Lord appeared. 43 Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the tent of meeting, 44 and the Lord said to Moses,45 “Get away from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once.” And they fell facedown.

46 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer and put incense in it, along with burning coals from the altar, and hurry to the assembly to make atonement for them. Wrath has come out from the Lord; the plague has started.” 47 So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people, but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. 48 He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped. 49 But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah. 50 Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the tent of meeting, for the plague had stopped."

There’s a lot going on here.  It is my hope to keep us focused on why we are even studying Numbers 16.  Paul gives this account as an example of so that “we will not crave evil things as they did.”  Before I begin, I want to give you an opportunity to discover truths from these scriptures.

1. What did Korah do that led to his destruction?
2. What was the cause of the plague at the end of this text?

There are two sinful actions that take place in this account.  Let’s work on number one first.

At first glance you might think that Korah messed up when he questioned Moses leadership position.  Korah did question Moses’ leadership but I don’t believe that is why God destroyed him and his followers.  I think Moses rebuked Korah and God destroyed Korah because Korah wanted Moses’ position.  Let’s be clear.  Moses had a lot of power.  But it was a position of power given to him by the one true God.  And it was a position that Moses strived to honor (although he did mess up at times).  Notice what Moses says,  Moses became very angry and said to the Lord, “Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them.”

Why is Moses saying this?

Because, Korah has come up against him with 250, well respected supporters, and is basically setting himself up to replace Moses.  Korah wants Moses’ power.

What is Paul wanting the church to understand through this example?  I don’t think it’s complicated at all. I believe Paul is saying, keep your heart in check…Have a posture of humility.  This reminds me of a passage of scripture found in 1 Peter 5:6

"Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time."

This verse is in opposition of the American dream.  We are conditioned to achieve our dreams.  Go after it.  You can do it.  But this isn’t what Peter taught.  Peter said to humble yourself.  But pay close attention to the context of how to humble.  This isn’t lazy.  This isn’t not going after it.  It’s actually a very faithful posture.  Notice the context.  Humble yourself where?  “under God’s mighty hand.”  Humility isn’t an “awe shucks, God could never use me” way of thinking.  Humility is being teachable.  Humility is being faithful with your current position of authority.  It’s okay to want a bigger position or more responsibility.  But how you get it is very important.  The best way to get a bigger position or more responsibility is for God to give it to you.

Here’s what I would encourage you to do.  Be your most faithful in your current opportunity.  And keep being your most faithful until God gives you something more.  Notice the hope found in this type of humility, “that he may life you up in due time.”  God has the best understanding of when you are ready.  Trust him.

I’m reminded of a time when I served at Flamingo Road Church in South Florida (now Potential Church).  I was on staff there for almost 10 years.  Around the 7 year mark I found myself being upset that two leaders, one younger and one the same age, who had recently been hired on staff, were offered the leadership position of Elder.  I couldn’t believe that they were selected above me.  Didn’t the Pastor know how much better I was than them?  I couldn’t understand it (I can look back now and see this as a great learning moment…but at the time I was really ticked off).  Here’s the truth.  I wasn’t ready to be an Elder and God knew it.  It wasn’t the responsibility of Elder that I desired, it was the title, the position, the power.  I can’t imagine how big my ego would have gotten if I had been given that position.  Even though I was so upset, looking back, I’m so grateful that God is way smarter than I think I am!

I hope that to be encouraging to you.  However, there is a strong warning here.  Be very careful that you don’t try to usurp what God has put into place.  Ask yourself the dangerous question, “Why do I want his/her position?”  When you start using language like, “I could do it better” or “I deserve it” or even more dangerous “They don’t deserve it.”  Be careful, you just might be picking a fight with the creator of the universe.  Notice what Peter writes just prior to the verse I shared above, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5 (NET)  The phrase “God opposes” is the same as “God goes against.”  Think on this.  When you get proud (not teachable because you know it better), God goes against you.  What stinks the most in this…Typically when God goes against you…There are others who are close by that get wounded because of your pride.

Let’s now look at the second sin that takes place in Numbers 16.  This one is found toward the end of the passage.  "The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 'You have killed the Lord’s people,' they said.”

This is difficult to discern.  I don’t have a clarity on how to discern what is and what isn’t God’s judgement.  However, I do think I understand what is taking place.  It is never in your best interest to question God’s judgement.  That’s exactly what happens here.  The people are ticked that God was so harsh on Korah and his friends.  They come to Moses and Aaron with this complaint.  But before Moses and Aaron have the opportunity to respond,  God shows up and He’s brought a plague.  14,700 people die before Aaron can make an atonement for these people’s sin.

Like I said, I can’t discern this for you.  I’m wrestling with this one myself.  What is below is my rambling as I process Numbers 16 myself.  I don’t expect it to make a lot of sense to you but I wanted you to see how I too am working out my faith.  **I don’t know more than God.  God sees the whole story while I only see parts.  God never asks me to understand it all but to simply trust Him.  I think it is very unwise to shake your fist at God because you don’t think He is just.  In times of great agony, when things happen that I don’t understand, my best posture is to be facedown on the ground.  Just like Moses.  Just like Aaron.  It isn’t my place to question God.  It is my place to worship Him with all my life.  If people must first fully understand God before they worship Him I fear that they will never be able to worship.  If I were to only have Numbers 16 to read, and were ignorant of the rest of God’s Word, I would come to this conclusion.  Sometimes, people you love and care about choose to go against God’s ways.  When this happen God brings judgement.  And, God’s judgement always has consequences.  When this happens, all I can do is cry out to God in worship.  Though he slay me I will follow.**

I hope you have enjoyed this study of 1 Corinthians chapter 10.  I hope most of all that it has cause you, the Christian, to live as God desires.  Remember, before God wants to use you to do something big, He first wants to do something big in you.

Blessings,
Pastor Matt

A Study of 1 Corinthians chapter 10 - Part 5 - Fruit Snacks

Today we are going to discuss the 3rd “example” that Paul offers in 1 Corinthians chapter 10.

Let me quickly remind you why this chapter is so important to me.  I too often see and hear Christians pointing their finger at the world in which they live.  The world is acting just as it is supposed to.  The better question is, “Are you, the Christian, acting as you are supposed to?”  Much of God’s judgement, that we discover in the Bible, is aimed, not at the world, but rather towards those who claim to be followers of God whose live’s reflect something else entirely.

Let’s first take a look at what Paul is referring to in Numbers chapter 21.

"When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them.  Then Israel made this vow to the Lord: 'If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy their cities.'  The Lord listened to Israel’s plea and gave the Canaanites over to them. They completely destroyed them and their towns; so the place was named Hormah.  They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, 'Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!'  Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died.  The people came to Moses and said, 'We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.' So Moses prayed for the people.  The Lord said to Moses, 'Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.' So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.”  Numbers 21:4-9 (NET)

Take a closer look at verses 1-4, what do you notice?
One thing you will discover is that the Israelites are traveling from a major victory.  In these 4 verses you read about a people facing a great foe and them making a vow with God…Then God comes through for them (once again) and they experience a great victory.  In short, they are coming off of a great spiritual high.

Have you discovered along your own spiritual journey what typically follows a spiritual high point?

Maybe you’ve noticed the valley on your way down?  Often, in the valley we complain.  Why?  Because, the valley seems to be the opposite of our spiritual mountain top experience.  Here is a truth that I invite you to adopt as your own.

Both the mountain top and the valley belong to the Lord.

Mature in your thinking on this subject.  Move away from the attitude of praise while on the mountain top and complaining in the valley.  Show God praise and respect in both places.

"There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!"

It wasn’t that God wasn’t meeting their needs.  It was the fact that they didn’t approve of how God was meeting their needs.  It’s like the little boy who woke up on Christmas morning to discover a band new shiny red bicycle.  He looks up at his parents and says, “But I wanted a blue one."

Okay…I’m going to rant a little.  Here we go.
Man does God love us.  He does.  He loves us so much that He sent His one and only Son to die for each one of us.  Think on that.  God loved you so much that He let His precious Son take the place of your sin so that you could have a relationship with Himself.  What I’m about to say has nothing to do with love.  God loves us period.

But...

I’m not so sure that God always likes us.  Let me explain.  I love my kids.  But sometimes I don’t like them.  Like when I get in my jeep and the back seat looks like a taco exploded.  Or that time when they filled our bathtub with water and then threw every towel and pillow they could find into the water.  Why?  What is wrong with you people? What have we done to deserve this?

When these things happen, do I love my kids.  Absolutely!  But I tell you what…They ain’t getting fruit snacks!  No way.  And it’s not because we don’t have them.  I can buy more fruit snacks then those little destroyers could ever eat.  But because of their actions my fruit snacks are off limits.  Am I going to feed them?  Yep, three meals a day.  Am I going to provide them shelter?  Yep.  I’m even going to shower them with hugs and kisses and tuck them in to bed at night.  I do all of this because I love them.  But my kids only get fruit snacks when I like them.

I think it’s similar with God.  Don’t be the person who says, “But I wanted the blue bike.”  Don’t live your life in a way that everywhere you go it looks like a taco exploded.  Don’t drown pillows.  Do you best to live your life in a way that it’s really easy for God to give you His fruit snacks.  Be thankful.  Be a great steward of your surroundings.  In short, live your life in such a way that God looks forward to blessing your life.  Okay, rant over.

Paul simply says, "let us not put Christ to the test…”  If you are unhappy with your current situation I want to ask you to think on this question.

“Why are you unhappy?”  And, “Why do you think you should have better?”

Your answer might reveal an area of your life that Jesus is trying to speak in to.  If so, don’t rush this.  Talk with God.  Then, talk with a mature believer about what God is teaching you.

Have a blessed day,
Pastor Matt

A Study of 1 Corinthians chapter 10 - Part 4 - The Waiting Game.

Thanks for staying with me as we study 1 Corinthians chapter 10.  During this study, I want to encourage the follower of Jesus to pay more attention to their own behavior than they do the world’s.  The world is acting just as it is supposed to.  The better question is, “Are you, the Christian, acting as you are supposed to?”

Here, Paul provides four “things that happened” as examples for Christians to learn from.  With each example Paul offers a quick summary and then the Biblical reference.  I am going to give this four examples in list form.

  1. Don’t be idolaters - Exodus 32:1-29
  2. Don’t be immoral - Numbers 25:1-9
  3. Don’t complain about God’s provision - Numbers 21:1-9
  4. Don’t question God’s judgement - Numbers 16:20-50

Today I’m going to focus on Paul’s second example, “And let us not be immoral, as some of them were…"

This phrase is in reference to Numbers 25:1-9.

"When Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to commit sexual immorality with the daughters of Moab. 2 These women invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; then the people ate and bowed down to their gods. 3 When Israel joined themselves to Baal-peor, the anger of the Lord flared up against Israel.

4 The Lord said to Moses, “Arrest all the leaders of the people, and hang them up before the Lord in broad daylight, so that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel.” 5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you must execute those of his men who were joined to Baal-peor.”

6 Just then one of the Israelites came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the plain view of Moses and of the whole community of the Israelites, while they were weeping at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he got up from among the assembly, took a javelin in his hand, 8 and went after the Israelite man into the tent and thrust through the Israelite man and into the woman’s abdomen. So the plague was stopped from the Israelites. 9 Those that died in the plague were 24,000.”  Numbers 25:1-9 (NET)

Paul simply says, “And let us not be immoral…” but let us take a deeper look at what was taking place and see what God has for us to learn.  To get you thinking I’ve provided a few questions about the above text.

1. Do you know how the Bible defines sexual immorality?
2. Do you think God’s view of sexual immorality has changed?
3. Are you currently being sexually immoral?
4. Do you think Jesus has a different attitude than the one discovered in Numbers 25?

First, this is an account of sexual immorality and God’s attitude toward it.  Let’s look into this scripture and other Biblical texts to learn more about what God expects from us concerning our bodies.  (Remember, this is written to the follower of Jesus.  If you’re not a follower of Jesus then you are not held to this standard.  But, if you are a follower of Jesus then this is for you.

Question 1:
Sexual immorality is any type of sex that happens outside of a Biblical marriage context.  In other terms, it is sin if you’re having sex with anyone who isn’t your spouse (husband and wife).  Even if your in love.  Even if you just really enjoy it.  If it is sex out side of God’s plan it is sin.  I know I just made some of you upset.  To explain my view let me answer the next question.

Question 2:
There is a fancy term called hermeneutic and it simply means to study or how you interpret something.  If you were to study the Bible with a redemptive hermeneutic (studying to discover if God changes, or redeems, a specific issue), what you will find is that God NEVER changes his mind on sexual immorality.  What was considered sexually immoral in Genesis is still sexually immoral in Revelation.  I laughed out loud when I heard my good friend and mentor Dan Southerland remark about this idea being “old fashioned.”  Dan replied,

"Old fashioned?  You bet!  How old?  Old as God.  He has not changed his mind on this.” - Dan Southerland

Look, I know sex outside of marriage is no longer a big deal in our culture.  But is still a big deal to God.  And, it should be a big deal for you as a follower of Jesus.  If you’re not a follower of Jesus, do what you want.  I’m not holding you to this standard.  But, if you are a person who confesses Jesus as savior please remember he is also your Lord.  Now…I’m gonna poke at you who are upset with me because you have different, more culturally accepted views.  Are you ready?  Here I go…You can never let what you think, what you feel, or what you want to do over rule over what God says.  NEVER.  God is boss.  Your thoughts, your feelings, and your desires are placed at the life, cross, and resurrection of Jesus.  Remember this scripture, “For you were bought at a price.  Therefore glorify God with your body” (1 Corinthians 6:20 NET).

Let me offer another perspective.  One day you will most likely get married.  You will probably value honesty and trust in your marriage.  Which means, before marriage, while you are only dating, you will more than likely have some conversations on your past.  When this conversation comes up, and believe me, it will, you will either lie or tell the truth.  What do you want to say to your future spouse?  An even better question is this, What do you hope to hear?  How do you want the love of your life to answer that question?  Here’s an idea…How about you start living today like you want them to answer.

I want to provide two hopeful future responses.

Response A) - I waited for you.  It wasn’t easy.  I’ve received some odd looks.  I’ve been made fun of along the way.  But, I endured all of that on purpose for you.

Response B) - I’ve got a past.  I’ve made mistakes.  But Jesus changed of my life.  When I gave my life to Jesus I also gave him authority over my life.  There was a time in my life when I did what I wanted to do.  But about (insert time frame) I changed.  Since that time, I’ve waited for you.  It hasn’t been easy.  It’s actually been extremely difficult.  I’ve received some odd looks.  I’ve been made fun of along the way.  But, I endured all of that on purpose for you.

I hope some version of the above responses will be a part of your future conversation.  Just remember, what you do with your body WILL affect another.

Question 3:
If yes stop.  Consider having this conversation with God, “God, I understand that You have created sex to be a part of marriage.  I’m not married so I am choosing to stop having sex.  Will I want to have sex?  Yes.  But I’m choosing to place your lordship over my desires.  You are my boss.  I trust that your plan is what is best for me.  I’m choosing to obey you because I love you and I want to be loyal to you.”  Then, do what you told God you were going to do.

Question 4:
I’ll answer this question first with scripture.  “In the beginning was the Word.  The Word was with God and the Word was God.”  “The Word became flesh and took up residence among us.”  “I and the Father are one."

Jesus has been with the Father since the beginning.  Jesus and God are the exact same.  Jesus isn’t like God, Jesus IS God.  So, no.  Jesus has the same attitude toward sin.  But here’s the good news.  Jesus is God’s grace.  Grace = an undeserved gift.  Grace has a name and it’s Jesus.

Think on the story of the woman caught in adultery.  After all the potential stone throwers leave, Jesus asks her, “Where are your accusers?”  The woman replies, “They have gone.”  Jesus then says, “I don’t condemn you either, go and sin no more.”  Notice the grace followed by the truth.  I’m not against you…But stop doing what is outside of God’s plan.

In closing.  Especially for those of you who are dating.  If you choose to honor God with your body by abstaining from sex until marriage…If you do this.  You will be made fun of.  Don’t be alarmed when this happens.  If you’re a man, and you choose to obey God in this area…You may totally freak out a willing companion.

This feels weird to type but I’m going to anyway…Have sex on purpose.  Honor God with your body.

By the way…I believe that if you can be obedient in this area of life…You can be obedient in any area.
Blessings,
Pastor Matt

A Study of 1 Corinthians chapter 10 - Part 3 - Isn’t this exciting?

The hope of these post is that we, the follower of Jesus, will focus on how we live out the Gospel instead of focusing our frustration on the world.  The world is acting just as it is supposed to.  The better question is, “Are you, the Christian, acting as you are supposed to?”

Our scripture passage for this series is found in 1 Corinthians chapter 10.  Here, Paul writes...

Paul provides four “things that happened” as examples for Christians to learn from.  With each example Paul offers a quick summary and then the Biblical reference.  I am going to give this four examples in list form.

  1. Don’t be idolaters - Exodus 32:1-29
  2. Don’t be immoral - Numbers 25:1-9
  3. Don’t complain about God’s provision - Numbers 21:1-9
  4. Don’t question God’s judgement - Numbers 16:20-50

Today I will be focusing on Paul’s first example - Don’t be idolaters - Exodus 32:1-29

The passage is a little long but it is worth the read.  Here’s the context.  God has used Moses to lead his children, the Israelites, out of Egypt.  They are now at Mt. Sinai.  Moses has been up on the top of Mt. Sinai for some time and the people down below are getting restless.

"When the people saw that Moses delayed in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him, “Get up, make us gods that will go before us. As for this fellow Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him!”

2 So Aaron said to them, “Break off the gold earrings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people broke off the gold earrings that were on their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4 He accepted the gold from them, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molten calf. Then they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it, and Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow will be a feast to the Lord.” 6 So they got up early on the next day and offered up burnt offerings and brought peace offerings, and the people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play.

7 The Lord spoke to Moses: “Go quickly, descend, because your people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have acted corruptly. 8 They have quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them—they have made for themselves a molten calf and have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt.’”

9 Then the Lord said to Moses: “I have seen this people. Look what a stiff-necked people they are! 10 So now, leave me alone so that my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them, and I will make from you a great nation.”

11 But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your anger burn against your people, whom you have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘For evil he led them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your burning anger, and relent of this evil against your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel your servants, to whom you swore by yourself and told them, ‘I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken about I will give to your descendants, and they will inherit it forever.’” 14 Then the Lordrelented over the evil that he had said he would do to his people.

15 Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hands. The tablets were written on both sides—they were written on the front and on the back. 16 Now the tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. 17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “It is the sound of war in the camp!” 18 Moses said, “It is not the sound of those who shout for victory, nor is it the sound of those who cry because they are overcome, but the sound of singing I hear.”

19 When he approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses became extremely angry. He threw the tablets from his hands and broke them to pieces at the bottom of the mountain. 20 He took the calf they had made and burned it in the fire, ground it to powder, poured it out on the water, and made the Israelites drink it.

21 Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you, that you have brought on them so great a sin?” 22 Aaron said, “Do not let your anger burn hot, my lord; you know these people, that they tend to evil. 23 They said to me, ‘Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this fellow Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.’ 24 So I said to them, ‘Whoever has gold, break it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”

25 Moses saw that the people were running wild, for Aaron had let them get completely out of control, causing derision from their enemies. 26 So Moses stood at the entrance of the camp and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” All the Levites gathered around him, 27 and he said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Each man fasten his sword on his side, and go back and forth from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and each one kill his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’”

28 The Levites did what Moses ordered, and that day about three thousand men of the people died. 29 Moses said, “You have been consecrated today for the Lord, for each of you was against his son or against his brother, so he has given a blessing to you today.”  Exodus 32:1-29 (NET)

Paul sums this story up as “don’t be idolaters…”  It is my hope that you notice what the people were worshiping.  To discover this, let me ask you a few questions.

  1. What did the people want this idol to do?
  2. Where did Aaron get the gold to create the idol?
  3. What did the people say about these newly crafted idols?
  4. What did Aaron do when he saw how the people were responding?
  5. How did the people respond to what Aaron did?
  6. After reading this account, do you think God takes this type of thing lightly?

Let’s look into the story and see what we might discover about our own situation.  Here is my thoughts concerning the questions above.

1 - "make us gods that will go before us."

The people wanted to be led and Moses had been gone too long.  Moses had proved to be quite an exciting leader.  Think about the amazing experiences these people had.  They saw God’s power by the plagues on the Egyptians.  They were paraded out of Egypt as the Egyptian people showered them with gifts.  They walked through the Red Sea.  And you thought last Sunday’s worship was good.  These people experienced some of the most incredible moments of all time.  And now, they’re bored and asking, "Where is Moses?"

Is our story not the same.  Don’t we love experiences.  The next spiritual rush.  The next set of chills.  The next spine tingling moment.  And if not careful.  If we don’t develop a mature spiritual life, we too will create false God’s that will lead us to the next great experience.

2 - "So Aaron said to them, 'Break off the gold earrings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.’  So all the people broke off the gold earrings that were on their ears and brought them to Aaron.  He accepted the gold from them, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molten calf."

False gods will always cost you.  Look at this scripture.  The people literally took the gold off of their bodies to create this idol.  Think of the money we spend on the things that keep us excited/engaged/fired-up.  It’s almost comical.  Am I saying that those books, those tickets, that game, that team, or that event are bad?  No, they’re only bad if you put them before God.

Let me poke at you…Be careful that you don’t make exciting things a top priority because your spiritual life is sooooooo boring.  If you’re church is boring…If your faith is a drag…Here’s an idea, go serve someone in need.  Want to do something even crazier?  Sell everything you own and use that money to change some lives…that should create some excitement for you.  Here’s the deal, if your church is boring then change churches.  It’s not difficult folks.   If enough people will stop going to boring churches we might see boring churches change to life giving - kingdom focused churches.  Okay, rant over.

3 - "Then they said, 'These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.'”

This got God’s attention.  How do I come to this conclusion?  Because God repeats what He heard them say to Moses, "Go quickly, descend, because your people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have acted corruptly. 8 They have quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them—they have made for themselves a molten calf and have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt.’

Notice what the people are actually worshiping.  They are worshiping their wealth.  It was their gold that created this golden idol.  Now they are giving this golden idol, their golden idol, their worship.  I can’t state this strong enough.  Do not worship your wealth.  Don’t worship your possessions.  Don’t give your $$ the credit God deserves.  God notices this idolatry and He does not look the other way.  Repent and change your actions and attitudes about your wealth.  Tell your $$ what to do.  Make you $$ worship God!

4 - "When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it, and Aaron made a proclamation and said, 'Tomorrow will be a feast to the Lord.'”

Don’t try to put a spiritual spin on your idolatry.  That’s what Aaron tried to do.  He tried to take sin and make it spiritual by giving it spiritual language and throwing a party.  This is an easy thing to do.  Aaron knew things were going wrong.  But, instead of repenting he tried correcting.  When in this predicament, the correct thing to do is say, “I’m wrong.  Forgive me Lord.  I will no longer act in this way.”  Why?  Because, there is no such things as partial obedience.

5 - "So they got up early on the next day and offered up burnt offerings and brought peace offerings, and the people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play."

They're having a good time in their sin.  It’s working for them.  It’s fun.  Some people associate the phrase “rose up to play.” to mean they people were engaging in sexual acts.  This is speculation.  The words used simply mean to play or have fun.  Any other meaning is assumption.  However, just because it’s not sexual doesn’t mean it’s less sinful.  The people had created a more enjoyable god.  I pray that if you have things in your life that you enjoy more than the one true God that you will refocus your life on the life, cross, and resurrection of Jesus.  Develop habits that reflect that you trust in and live like Jesus.

And finally...

6 - “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Each man fasten his sword on his side, and go back and forth from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and each one kill his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’  The Levites did what Moses ordered, and that day about three thousand men of the people died."

Jesus once said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.”  God doesn’t just want first place in your life, He demands it.  Don’t neglect the commandment, "You shall not bow down to them or serve them (idols), for I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me…"

Don’t reject God.
Put him first.
Enjoy life.
Just understand that everything has a proper place.
And remember...
God goes first.

You’ve heard my thoughts.  But I must remind you, what God wants to say to you is much more important.  Continue your time with God today.  What is he saying to you?  What is He asking you to do about it?

Blessings,
Pastor Matt
